Grapes for O-PORT-UNIDADE
Twenty-five Producers have donated the Grapes for the O-PORT-UNIDADE Port Project. The origin of the grapes was literally from all over the Douro, from Quinta dos Avidagos in the Baixo Corgo to the Quinta do Vale Meao in the Douro Superior.
Arriving on 22nd of September 2013 were mostly Vinhas Velhas, which does mean Old Vines in Portuguese. This term does not only indicate the age of the vines, but is an indication of mixed planted varieties, which was very common in the Douro Valley until the 1980s and is becoming more and more common again.
The average age of the vines of the more than 10t of grapes was exactly 35,48 years and due to the comments at the Niepoort sorting table, many of these boxes were already pre-sorted prior to arriving, leading to an “outstanding grape quality”. “The grapes were in perfect condition“ stated Noval’s enologist Antonio Agrellos. “With these excellent grapes I am very optimistic to produce a very special Port” says Axel Probst from World of Port, the organiser of this project.
